MOROCCO
........................................................................................................................
Morocco is an Islamic Kingdom based in North Africa. It is an incredibly beautiful and diverse country with long sandy beaches, seriously big mountains, imperial cities and the famous Sahara desert. It is a land of contast, the King is the 5th richest man in the World and yet many of his subjects live in real poverty.
Some of the problems facing Morocco include drought, emmigration, tensions over the Western Sahara, Islamic fundamentalism, the illegal growth and export of cannabis and a growing numnber of orphans.
"...problems include drought, emmigration, tension, Islamic fundamentalism, illegal growth and export of cannabis and a growing number of orphans".
We have been working in partnership with Moroccan based organisations since 2002. Our main partner is the
Village of Hope Orphanage. We take work teams out to carry out practical projects, arrange longer term placements for volunteer workers, deliver aid and provide financial support.
Since 2004, we have been running
Ethical Holidays to Morocco. We take teams who stay at the orphanage, undertake a 50 mile sponsored trek in the Mid-Atlas mountains, finishing with several day trips to near by Berber towns, the famous city of Fes and Meknes. By the end of 2006, we will have raised over £20,000 for the Village of Hope through these ethical holidays.
UK based schools are now using these treks as Gold Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
By the end of 2008 we have raised over £34,000 for the Village of Hope and the Nichan Project through these ethical holidays.
Nichan is Arabic for “straight ahead” and also means “integrity”.
The Nichan Project is looking to establish a nationwide network of disabled centers offering therapy to disabled children and training to their parents. To date centres have been planted in 7 towns and we have raised over £25,000 to purchase and refurbish one of the centers. We also provide the running costs for one centre which employs 4 Moroccan women and serves over 80 children each week. A team from Foxfield Special School fitted a sensory room and provided training to the staff, arts teams have also been out to decorate two centers and John Birch (Baily & Birch Electrical Contactors) have re-wired 3 of the centers. Medium term volunteer placements can be arranged for the orphanage and the Nichan Project.
